Cold Is Where You Find It

The Schlippenbach Trio has been playing together now for over three decades, and the members (Alexander von Schlippenbach on piano, Evan Parker on sax, and Paul Lovens on percussion) have honed their communicative abilities to a rare degree. Most of their recent recordings have been live, but this one is a studio session with shorter pieces. It is noteworthy for Evan Parker playing tenor sax exclusively, no soprano here. Compared to their earlier works, this is slower and more contemplative music, no longer energy music "against the Empire," just three human beings conversing with one another.

While some of their earlier recordings are essential, (Pakistani Pomade, 50th Birthday Concert -- see my reviews of both), GOLD IS WHERE YOU FIND IT, on the Swiss Intakt label, is a fine addition to their discography. The Schlippenbach Trio continues to tour every year, while the Parker/Guy/Lytton Trio seems to play together quite infrequently. Long may they play!
